picking up the pieces is never pretty
it usually requires some sort of shedding of old skin
learning how to be whole again
and which pieces even fit your puzzle anymore
it's always hard to let go
finally severing the last string holding something together
but it's even more damaging trying to
hold on to something weighing you down
i've found comfort in starting over
getting drunk silver linings
because that seems to be the only thing
keeping me from falling apart
and from my heart collapsing
i discovered something i wasn't very good at
something no one could explain to help me understand
i just had to do it
to feel it
and be okay with how it went
how it ended
i wanted to go back
do it over
erase my memory of what it used to be
but if i could go back,
this wouldn't be called
the aftermath
